On Chinese Dance

Chinese classical dance is a distinctive art form. Taking its roots from the diverse peoples and regions of China, Chinese classical dance encompasses both the heritage of China and its profound aesthetic tradition.

History

Chinese dance dates back over 5000 years. In its early stages it was developed among the common people, members of the imperial court, and through early theatrical productions. After 1919, however, dedicated artists began to document and systematize Chinese dance.

The system of Chinese dance we have today contains influences from folk dances and folk operas, and from ballet and martial arts. It lends itself well to expressing the unique traits of a people, of imparting morals, and of telling classic tales.

Characteristics

Chinese classical dance is unique in that it emphasizes not only beauty of movement, but also expression of substance. That is, it places great value on the performer's ability to convey the inner meaning of a piece. It involves both form and spirit and is aesthetic both inside and out.

There are a remarkable variety of movements and techniques involved in Chinese dance. An accomplished dancer is expected to master them all and to thereby be able to portray any character.

Training

Chinese dance of course requires strict physical training. Actions and movements must be developed with an accuracy and precision that follow preset rules of Chinese dance. Dancers are taught fluidity of movement; a movement originating in one part of the body must encompass the rest of the body. From the eyes to the feet, every movement must be precise and controlled, conveying the traits of the personage being portrayed.

One of the most important aspects of Chinese dance is the incorporation of the spirit into a performance. Performers not only need to know the techniques, but also to incorporate their state of mind into a piece, thereby conveying the inner meaning of it. Therefore, training in Chinese classical dance involves both precision of movement and a cultivation of the mind.
